Leading the way in Driver Education  ---------------------------------------------------------------------  Passion  Hello, my name is Kim Ayers.  Together with my husband Jim, we are proud to be in year 9 of serving the North Shore community. Let me share with you, how StreetSmart was born. Years ago, I took a  job teaching teens to drive.  I immediately discovered that I not only enjoyed teaching, but that I really "clicked" with teens.  It didn't hurt that I wasn't at all flustered by merging onto a highway with an unskilled driver!   I did some research, and found frightening facts that made me fear for the safety of my students - other people's children!  I won't bore you with statistics here (but feel free to call me anytime!).  Teens have been crashing at an alarming rate, and I wanted to do something about it. My passion was awakened & I began my crusade while employed elsewhere - although I  learned that I could be more effective if I had the ability to design my own curriculum, train students under my own standards, hire and train my own staff, and much more!   In the years that followed, StreetSmart was born.  Here's what has been happening! Almost 3,000 students trained under StreetSmart's high standards 4 years as board member of the PDEA (Professional Driver Educator Assoc.) Featured presenter at industry conference (New England Traffic Safety Education Assoc.) Owner trained as an 'advanced driver skills' instructor  Instructor training curriculum exceeds RMV requirements -approved & licensed Work with state legislature & RMV officials as JOL laws revamped Invited by RMV officials to participate in coalition for teen driver safety Partnership with Safe Roads Alliance & In Control Advanced Driver Training (details soon!)  City of Salem school bus drivers continuing education course provided CPR/1st Aid certification classes incorporated State vendor for Mass Rehab Commission and Department of Mental Health  ...and more I am so proud to now have a dedicated staff of 12 who are equally as committed to making our roads safer for everyone.  We have done a lot, but we are just beginning! Our modern facility is equipped with the latest audio-visual tools. We use a "hands-on" approach, with activities such as: Computerized driving simulators, Interactive Remote Control Quizzes, DUI impairment goggles, guest speakers & demonstrators.        Our behind-the-wheel lessons give students the opportunity to practice what we preach: Basic driving skills PLUS, how to handle emergency situations & accident prevention techniques: all in a safe environment. We bring our students out of their 'comfort zones' and challenge them to THINK.
